LGU ties up with cement firm for kid’s program

Gabriel Bonjoc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The city government  of Naga has partnered with APO Cement Corporation/CEMEX for the implementation of a Child Development Program for the more than 800 children in the city.

The Child Development Program is a four-fold initiative aimed to develop balanced or “well-rounded” individuals.

Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong, represented by his daughter  Atty. Kristine Chiong, said that childhood is a  crucial stage in a person’s life because it is in this early age when the child starts to absorb teachings and experiences that will later become basis in his growing up years.

To provide children with a better educational foundation, Atty. Chiong said the city of Naga and CEMEX agreed to work together for the Child Development Program which will help prepare children for school (and do good in their studies) so they can make their dream come true.

The comprehensive program starts with the story telling caravan. This is done to boost the thinking capacity of children,  enhance their reading and comprehension skills, and to imbibe in them the culture of excellence.

Providing supplemental feeding to the beneficiaries is another aspect of the program. This will be implemented with the help of Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The program will also improve or upgrade the day care centers in the city to provide children with  classrooms conducive for learning.

The program’s long term goal is the establishment of a kids museum which will be recognized as the premier institution serving young children and their families, while inspiring them to learn about themselves and the culturally-diverse community in which the Nagahanons live in.  Also planned is a  children's festival that will showcase the Nagahanon children’s talent and skills.

Chiong said they will try their best to sustain the program for the successive generation of children.

The Child Development Program  was launched at the APO Cement Corporation/CEMEX gymnasium in Barangay Tinaan recently and was attended by the children beneficiaries and their parents. (FREEMAN)
