Intel to power up mobile devices

CEBU, Philippines - Known for its Atom processors in netbooks and personal computers, Intel innovates its architecture to power up smartphones and tablets as it acknowledges mobile technology as the potential trend of computing.

Intel Philippines business development manager Wowie Wong said that the company which is aggressive in its research and development had already foreseen the mobile technology as the future of computing.

At present, he added that there is a dynamic mobile lifestyle with the increasing number of active users of the web who are mostly teens and the growing market access to affordable gadgets.

He said that Intel recognizes such trend and will introduce mobility solutions using devices that are designed in the mobile landscape, particularly smartphones and tablets.

Wong said that the Intel architecture that is designed for mobile computing boasts of quality performance, higher power efficiency and longer battery life.

He further clarified that the performance standpoint of mobile devices does not solely depend on the number of cores it has since too many cores easily consume the battery life while fewer cores run with optimal power.

“The entire principle of Intel is to come up with technology like the Intel Atom processors with stronger output but with less power consumption,” he said.

He added that the Intel Atom processor serves as a better alternative from quad core or octacore processors but admitted that it is quite difficult to convince users to use single core processor that is ideally-designed with how mobile applications are developed nowadays.

“Again, it boils down to not all cores being created equal,” Wong stated.

Intel Microelectronics Philippines, Inc. marketing manager Randy Kanapi said that Intel-powered smartphones and tablets showcase the same performance and long battery life of their netbooks and laptops.

These mobile devices that has and will have the Intel Atom processor include Acer, Lenovo, ZTE, Motorola, Lava, Megafon, Safaricom, Orange, Etisalat, Ramos, Coby, Asus, HP, Dell, LG, Samsung, and Fujitsu.

He cited that benchmark tests showed that Asus Fonepad running on the Intel Atom Z2460 was found to be faster in launching web applications, more responsive and had longer battery life compared to other tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Onda V812, Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.

The Intel Atom Processor z2580 platform, on the other hand, features quality performance, socially-smart camera, stunning graphics performance, wireless display, and security.

The IdeaPhone K900 of Lenovo that is set to be launched by the end of this year will be the first to be powered with the Intel Atom Z2580 processor.
