Who to turn to?

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones - The Philippine Star

What happened to the road repair works?

This was asked by a reader, who we chanced upon at a mall. He said that it seems there are now so many bad roads and he is wondering if the government would continue to fix roads as it had done a few months ago.

We told him that we hope we had the answer to his question, but since we also don’t know, we are shouting it out loud through this column.

The situation has also worsened with the bad weather.

There was this interesting discussion in the Motorists’ Corner page on Facebook about where to complain about the poor condition of the roads.

We can still vividly recall that there was a form that you could fill up at Cebu City Hall called ‘Usa ka Problema’ (One Problem), where you can tell the mayor about something that needs to be acted upon.

This was in the 1990s during the second term of then Mayor Tomas Osmeña. We don’t know if the form still exists, but it surely was a good way for government to reach out to the people.

With social media, we can continue to make a difference, by posting pictures of these roads that need to be fixed.

Many government offices also have their own Facebook pages and websites, which you can also use to get in touch with the right people to address certain problems.

Television networks are also opening up to their viewers by allowing us ordinary people to share our videos, which can also help open the eyes of those in authority to the reality especially if their staff are not informing them properly of the real situation.

We can all do our share to make this a better country for all of us, let us do our share.

Marching bands make celebrations lively.

But, when marching bands just want to use the roads to practice doing parades, this is too much for motorists to bear.

So, who should regulate this crazy practice of interfering with the flow of traffic just so a band can move from one place to another? Can’t they use the sidewalk?

Our local officials must find a way to instill in the minds of these bands that their being a marching band doesn’t mean they can just use the streets anytime they want.

If there is a parade, yes. But if they just want to show off, that is like violating the rights of others, who need to use the road.
