MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

We have been writing this column for almost 20 years. The Motoring Section of The FREEMAN was first launched in 1993 and we became the first editor.

Part of the section was this column, which was to tackle all aspects of the motoring industry.

As the first few months passed, this became an outlet for motorists to air their gripes against traffic authorities, traffic congestion, and everything that is related to their day-to-day activities, thus we focused on such matters for almost two decades now.

Every week, we receive complaints about this and that and the way we see it, the problem boils down to discipline.

Many times we have personally talked to officials, who would sometimes tell us that there are matters that they can’t do anything about for one reason or another.

If there is one thing that is causing most of the traffic problems, it is the lack of discipline, not only of the drivers, but also the law enforcers.

By drivers, we don’t mean only those subject to the complaints, but also those who complain, but refuse to do their share.

Let us all do our share in helping make this world a better place to live in. Follow traffic rules, make sure your vehicle and the driver are both fit to travel, comply properly with the requirements when you get a driver’s license and when you register your vehicle, and many more little things.

Unless you do your share, it would not be right for you to keep on complaining.

Now, back to those issues raised by our readers.

One, who lives in the south, is asking if there is any authority, who gives approval to the putting up of signs in the middle of the highway.

The motorist, who hails from Naga City, said that he has noticed many signs right in the middle of the highway, which at night, are not very visible.

He is wondering if those who put them there have asked permission from anybody to do so.

This is a good point, but we really don’t know the answer to the question.

It has been reported that in two months, the Helmet Act will be fully implemented. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is now sending its officials and staff around to inform people about this law and its implementation.

While we are hoping to see this law properly implemented, we are also hoping that the LTO would include in their information drive, the proper way to drive motorcycles.

It has been observed by many that motorcycle drivers get involved in many accidents because of the way people drive.
