Safe driving

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

Drive safely when you go out of town.

Safe driving starts before you even turn on the ignition, you have to check your vehicle to make sure that it is roadworthy.

Remember the word BLOWBAG, which means Brakes, Lights, Oil, Water, Battery, Air, and Gas, as your guide to check your vehicle before driving off.

Of course, it is best to have the vehicle checked by a reputable mechanic or the service center of your car dealer.

Don’t risk driving when you find something wrong. A spoiled plan is better than having to deal with an accident where lives can be forever maimed or lost.

One of our readers posted on the Facebook page of Motorists’ Corner his concern about the plan to increase the parking fees.

He said that if CITOM wants to increase parking fees, it must also make sure that the “watch your car boys” or the local toughies, who collect additional money from the motorists, would not anymore be tolerated.

For now, many drivers are already paying a lot more than the parking fees collected by CITOM, which is unfair and a clear violation of the Anti-Mendicancy Law, but unfortunately motorists have no choice but give money or their cars would get scratched.

Here’s another email from Jesson Morata:

Last week, several of your readers aired out their grievances against vehicles running without their headlights on at night. I share the same sentiment.

I observe that several jeepneys plying the Talamban route don’t use their headlights at night. I had several encounters with these jeepney drivers in the vicinity of Cebu Business Park.

At one point I almost had an accident because I failed to notice the approaching jeepney because its headlights was not on as it was trying to overtake another jeepney using the opposite lane.

I hope CITOM would conduct an operation against these drivers. I wonder if these drivers know that they are putting so many lives at risk with this irresponsible act.

Turning the headlights on at night is such a basic and simple thing to do. Yet, so many drivers still fall short of complying with the law.

Drivers who refuse to use their headlights probably think that them seeing the road is enough.

The others on the road have to see them also.

This goes also to drivers of motorcycles, who don’t care about tail lights and even those riding on bicycles and trisikads on the highways.

By using lights, you lessen the chance of yourself getting hurt or killed. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out, right?
