Evolution of technology to wipe out competition

-

The evolution of technology will eventually wipe out competition especially in the software development works, as proprietary developers like Microsoft, and Open Source community are starting to work hand-in-hand to create wiser technology solutions to end users.

In an interview with Microsoft Corporation’s worldwide general manager Bill Hilf, he said that efforts are now being intensified to open up “inter-operability” among technology development giants to maximize the power of technology, specifically in helping businesses.

Hilf said the world that is now heavily driven by technology, has forced IT industry players to work together, instead of competing against each other.

“The consumers forced the industry to change. We have to be partners,” Hilf said adding that most newly introduced software solutions now are running under “mixed-stuff”.

In fact, he said that 95 percent of Microsoft’s business comes from partners. “Without partnership we [Microsoft] won’t make money. Our partners are our lifeline.”

Thus, a radical change is now starting to brew in the technology development arena, the mainframe environment is slowly moving to the open system, Hift said.

Likewise, Sun Microsystems Philippines Inc. president Cynthia Mamon said that the technology trend now is moving towards “heterogeneous” platform which will support the growth of real IT environment.

Sun Microsystems is one of the hard core believers of Open Source technology, and the developer of Solaris, among others.

According to Mamon the collaboration between the “used to be competing parties”– the proprietary software developers and open source community, was started by the technology prime movers, in order to give empowerment to customers.

“We have to develop the attitude of strong collaboration and integration,” Mamon said.

Hilf was in the Philippines recently to introduce Microsoft’s newest products to the Philippine market.

Microsoft formally introduced its next generation infrastructure and application platform products, in partnership with IT giants like Sun Microsystems, Intel, Dell and HP.

These new products include; Windows Server 2008, Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, and Microsoft SQL Server 2008. These products are targeted to the Philippine enterprise customers and developers.

Windows Server 2008 is the next-generation Windows Server operating system that will help IT professionals achieve more control, greater flexibility and increased protection.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008, on the other hand, provides a trusted, productive, and intelligent data platform that enables end-users to run the most demanding mission critical applications.

The new Microsoft Visual Studio (2008) enables developers to rapidly create connected applications that deliver the highest quality, rich user experiences.

These three next-generation IT infrastructure will also be formally introduced to Cebu market this month. – Ehda M. Dagooc
