Solon seeks Vigan airport upgrade

MANILA, Philippines - Ilocos Sur Rep. Luis Ryan Singson has sought the allocation of P100 million for the upgrading of the Vigan airport to pave the way for business and tourism boom in the historic northern city.

Singson said that he made representations with the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) which has an outlay of P100 billion for the repair and upgrading of airports throughout the country.

He said that the runway of the airport in Vigan needs to be extended by 500 meters to be able to accommodate commercial flights that would bring in regular travellers and visitors.

The allocation would also be utilized for the procurement of night instruments, navigational equipment, and the construction of a control tower, a fire station, and a perimeter fence.

The youngest son of Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson has also filed a bill seeking to create a special economic zone and a freeport in Cabugao town where the Port of Salomague is located.

Among his other legislative proposals are a bill creating a Metro Vigan Development Authority, and a so-called ‘yaya’ bill that provides for scholarships for household helps from high school to college.

Vigan is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage site in recognition for its centuries-old ancestral houses that had withstood the ravages of time including two world wars.
