TACURONG CITY, Philippines — Two people were killed and 16 others were injured when an improvised bomb went off along a national highway here on New Year’s Eve.
 
Senior Superintendent Raul Supiter, director of the Sultan Kudarat provincial police, said Monday the fatalities — Dominador Datahan and Alladin Laguiab — died from multiple shrapnel wounds.
 
Datahan and Laguiab were reportedly walking by when the IED on the tricycle parked near the entrance to the roadside Villa Garde Videoke Bar in Barangay Buenaflor exploded.
 
Supiter said probers are convinced the establishment was the target of the bomb attack.
 
“The roof of the tricycle was blown out. Investigators are still trying to determine who brought the tricycle near that bar,” Supiter told The STAR on Monday morning.    
 
Supiter said the explosion also injured 16 others, among them motorists who were hit by flying fragments of metal with jagged edges.
 
They were brought to nearby hospitals.
 
Supiter said informants are saying the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters was responsible for the bombing.
