Move follows death of boy: Warning signs at SRP tunnel eyed

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Following the accident that killed a boy who was strolling in the area last Tuesday, the Department of Public Works and Highways-7 is putting up signages at the South Road Properties tunnel to warn both pedestrians and motorists.

This was after Cebu City Councilor David Tumulak, chairman of the council committee on public order and safety, met with DPWH-Cebu City Engineer Nicomedes Leonor yesterday morning to prevent a similar accident from occurring again.

Jonas Cuyno, 6, of Barangay Pasil died on the spot after he was run over by a trailer truck near the tunnel.

“Nihangyo ta sa DPWH nga pabutangan og mga signages nga dili palaktan sa mga tawo ug dili sad pwede magbiseklita sa tunnel ug ingon ma sa viaduct, ingon man sa paglikay sa mga disgrasya kay dili nato mausab ang  nahitabo ngadto sa usa ka bata,” he told The FREEMAN.

He said he observed that there are a number of young individuals who at the viaduct area, which he said is too dangerous for them.

“Naobserbahan nga naay magdive-dive sa viaduct.  Peligro kaayo. Kini sila mga kabatan-onan sa Carbon (Public Market),” he said.

Tumulak also requested Barangay Ermita tanods to monitor the area to keep people away.

To address this concern, Leonor said they would install signages and other advisory messages at the area before the month ends.

“Will try our best nga before the end of this month kay mag-requisition pa mi sa materials ug mag-canvass pa, the usual government procedure. Maayo gani karon nga week pa lang ning among budget para maintenance,” he said.

Tumulak said he was happy that DPWH acted quickly on his request.

Cuyno died on the spot after he was squashed by the weight of the truck while crossing the road after his older brother.

Francisco Ouano, Cebu City Transportation Office operations chief, advised parents to closely monitor their children.

“Niuna og labang ang iyang igsoon then niapas diay siya then wala naka-brake ang truck….  Patay gyud, nalata,” he said. (FREEMAN)
