Doesn't Sen. Drilon know what delicadeza is?

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Bobit S. Avila -

It was the first time ever that the Philippines officially celebrated Chinese New Year and that’s why we didn’t have any office yesterday. Sunday evening, I watched from my house the brilliant fireworks display of the Waterfront Hotel as I have a commanding view of that part of Cebu City and yesterday for lunch we attended the Dragon Dance and Yee Sang Ceremonial Toss at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort & Spa with a sumptuous lunch prepared by Chef Bun Bon Hoe at the Tea of Spring.

The Shang’s honored guests were Gov. Gwen F. Garcia, Mrs. Kristine Kouk, Chinese Consul General Zhang Weiguo and his wife Chen Lianning, Consul Wang Jinyan, Consul Huang Rongzhi and Consul Zhang Ran. Of course we were at the media table with Ms. Mildred Amon and enjoyed our first Chinese feast to greet the Water Dragon.

It is indeed a good year for the Water Dragon, which happens only once every 60-years which my good friend Henry Yu emailed to me. The next Water Dragon will come in 2072 … and you can check whether you could still be alive by then. Mr. Yu also tells me that this is also a good year for those born in the Year of the Rabbit … so if the Chinese astrologers are right, then this must be a good year for me … though it started badly as my son JV had an accident on my BMW during the first week of January. We’ll find out at the end of the year.

Last Saturday, the Philippine government once more lost another of its cases filed against the Marcos family when the Sandiganbayan junked a P51 billion damage suit filed 25 years ago after the EDSA Revolt. This is another proof that justice in this country moves in a snail’s pace. I don’t mind waiting that long if the government only won its case … but it just took too long for our courts to decide on this case and now the Sandiganbayan ruled that the Philippine Commission on Good Government (PCGG) failed to prove that the Marcoses enriched themselves by stealing government funds.

What a country!

It just makes me imagine that years from now, the Sandiganbayan would also rule that former Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) is also innocent of the cheating charges slapped against her by the Aquino Regime. Come to think of it, when the Aquinos and the Liberal Party were in the opposition, they were great in character assassination and destroying the credibility of those people in power. But now that they are in power, they seem to be powerless in securing convictions of those whom they publicly charged as plunderers in the mainstream media. Again, what a country!

Remember the term “delicadeza?” This was something that the opposition then slapped against then Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. But now it seems that the people who used to demand delicadeza from the previous administration and are now in power also forgot what delicadeza means. Yes I’m referring to that meeting by Pres. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III with the impeachment prosecutors last Friday night. But then we already know that Pres. Aquino doesn’t even understand the meaning of social graces so he really couldn’t care any less what you folks out there would accuse him of.

I can understand why Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona wants Senator-judge Franklin Drilon to inhibit himself from the Impeachment hearing because it seems that he is no longer wearing the robe of a senator-judge, but a prosecutor. Worse of all, he openly accepts TV interviews, something which I find very abhorrent. Just imagine, we in the media cannot even write anything about an ongoing court litigation because of sub-judice issues. Yet Senator-judge Drilon apparently doesn’t care.

Come now, we know too well which side Sen. Drilon is on, but if he has some delicadeza, he should refrain from making interviews with the media. After all the senator-judges or even the prosecutors have an assigned spokesperson whom the media can interview. Sen. Drilon was one of those seeking the resignation of CJ Corona for reasons of delicadeza, now the ball is in his court. But I don’t think he even knows what delicadeza is all about.

Last Saturday evening, the Cebu media met that feisty Congresswoman from Zambales, Rep. Mitos Magsaysay in a presscon in Grand Majestic. It was the first time for me to meet her and I found her not only very conversant in our current events, she is also a very brave woman. She was here to check the waters, whether she could run for senator in the coming 2013 elections and she actually listened to our suggestions and advices. She carries the name of a Magsaysay and thus has the advantage of a name recall. Pres. Ramon Magsaysay is after all the best-loved President this country.
