CEBU, Philippines — The post-graduate medical intern who gave medical care to a woman who lost her arm in an accident at the Metro Rail Transit station in Manila last November 14 was honored by the University of the Visayas - Gullas College of Medicine for her heroic act.

Charleane Flora Mae Jandic was given a plaque and a cash gift by Jose "Dodong" Gullas, executive vice president of UV-Gullas College of Medicine during the Christmas party of the medical students held at Bai Hotel, Mandaue City last Saturday evening.

Gullas said he is proud of Jandic, a product of UV-Gullas College of Medicine.

He also offered Jandic the opportunity to teach in the school.

“I’m very happy. We’re praying for her. I’m offering Doctor Jandic a teaching position (here),” Gullas said.

Jandic said she is thankful that her alma mater recognized her good deed, adding that she did not think of any reward but that her actions were more of a public service.

“Actually, okay ra gyud ko wala’y awarding kay ana ko wala nako gibuhat para mangolekta’g award,” said Jandic, a native of Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Jandic shared that when the incident happened, she was hesitant to apply her skills on emergency response because she did not bring any medical paraphernalia with her, but offered her help in the end.

“Overall, weird gyud gihapon siya and then it gets overwhelming because I just did what I have to do during that time. (I) was not thinking kung unsa'y outcome. I was thinking of the patient na ma-okay siya, ma-transfer siya,” she said.

After applying first aid, she asked a medical responder if she can leave the patient in their care but she was advised to accompany the woman to Makati Medical Hospital.

“Gi-ask nako ang medic nga i-endorse nako sa ilaha, i-bilin nako sa ilaha ang patient and then niana man sila na 'kuyog nalang doc ikaw ma’y una nag-manage’. Gikuyogan nalang jud nako until sa Makati Med. Katong na stabilize na siya nananghid na jud ko nga molakaw na ko kay naghuwat na ako tita,” Jandic shared.

Doctor Jasmin Fribeng, OIC dean of UV College of Medicine said Jandic is an inspiration to all medical students and hopes that their students will also do the same heroic act.

“Very overwhelming. We are very, very proud of her sa iyahang nabuhat. Nagamit gyud niya iyahang instinct, iyahang learnings as an intern here in the school. She is a very good student. I was one of her residents in Chong Hua (Hospital), she was under us in family medicine, she was very good at that in the ER. Helpful na gyud kaayo si Jandic. She goes the extra mile, and extra effort for internship katong tua pa siya didto,” Fribeng said.

Jandic completed her degree in BS Nursing in Iloilo City and transferred to Cebu in 2012 to pursue a medical degree in UV-Gullas College of Medicine in 2013.

She graduated in May this year and is currently completing her one-year internship at the Chinese General Hospital in Manila, a prerequisite before she can take the licensure examinations. (FREEMAN)
