Mining firm boosts gov’t forestry program

MANILA, Philippines - Reforestation is a daily activity and is not just undertaken during the Earth Day celebration, and as such Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI) supports the government’s community-based forestry management (CBFM) program by providing funds for reforesting denuded or barren areas and improving forest cover in Regions 11 and 12.

SMI has established two plant nurseries that have produced a total of 800,000 seedlings that were distributed and planted across the two regions, and has vowed to intensify its support for the CBFM program.

Four CBFM areas in South Cotabato have since benefited from SMI assistance. The 82-hectare CBFM area in Balasiao has received P2.2 million, while the 80-hectare forestry area in Danlag got P2.2-million funding.

Last year, SMI concentrated its support on Barangays Buto and Palo in Tampakan, South Cotabato by pouring in P3 million in reforesting a 100-hectare forestry area.
