Boo - you’re tricked!

Boo - you’re tricked!

There’s nothing quite like the cold breeze of the “ber” months to make you reminisce over a year going by too fast — and Halloween as an excuse to honor or poke fun at the moments that made us laugh or cry so far in 2021. Ideas that became obsolete or didn’t make it: Britney Spears’ yellow polka-dot crop top that started #FreeBritney (as of last month, she finally is); or Lil Was X’s satanic lap dance. The tear-jerking closure from Steve of Blue’s Clues (I did find some not-so-identical pieces from Marc Jacobs and Museum of Peace & Quiet). Let loose this long weekend and have fun. Happy Halloween!

‘Squid game’ luxe

I know, it’s ironic to wear something luxurious to portray one of the cash-strapped contestants in Squid Game — this year’s most watched TV series about capitalism and the harrowing gap between social classes — as opposed to a cheap copy of the track suits in the show, but this one’s actually a keeper, a better choice versus something throwaway that will end up in landfills, and will see extended life as an airport fashion staple.

This look is part of the collection where, over the weekend, Daniel Lee’s Bottega Veneta took the Milan-based fashion house to Detroit to stake its claim on a signature shade of Bottega Green — not this one, but a more saturated shade of vibrant apple green you’ll be seeing all over its branding soon.

Billionaire goes to space

Big spaceships mean wide-brimmed cowboy hats to accommodate the bigger ego of billionaire Jeff Bezos when he went into space aboard his private space flight company Blue Origin in July. Complaints of grueling work conditions back at his company Amazon are a shudder-worthy real-life horror. Warm yourself up with this Balenciaga bomber in collaboration with NASA, while this cowboy hat by Alie Shop provides lots of shade.

Just ‘dune’ it

Nov. 10 can’t come fast enough — that’s when Greater Manila cinemas are reopening, with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune headlining what’s showing in theaters. Since stepping into the unknown feels a little bit like Lady Jessica arriving on Arrakis, why not splurge for this dystopian-meets-couture Rick Owens Spring 2022 look? A face mask will go well with both looks.

Faceless kim

It’s kinda spooky at first, but Kim Kardashian rewrote the rules of red carpet dressing with this faceless Balenciaga haute couture look. With an oversized black tee silhouette as a dress with a train and black stockings that stretched all the way to her scalp and down to the tips of her fingers and shoes, topped off by glossy ponytail extensions, she obscures her selfie-famous face yet highlights how recognizable her hourglass figure is. The best part? You might already have the essentials like an oversize tee and stockings in your closet. Add a Tokyo Posh clip-on ponytail to complete the look.

Bennifer 2.0

There were a couple of other shocking celebrity couples moments so far in 2021. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spilled scalding-hot tea about the Queen and the royal family during their interview with Oprah Winfrey that made jaws drop in March. Recently, in a GQ cover story, Megan Fox “swears to God, he (meaning her beau, Machine Gun Kelly) disappeared like a ninja in a smoke bomb.” But they’re not as costume-worthy as Bennifer 2.0, with Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck referencing themselves from her music video Jenny from The Block. When the news exploded, the reunion 19 years later was juicy as Juicy Couture tracksuits, but ultimately was a salve for pandemic-weary souls. While we’re at it, go for a fun strappy bikini like Candice by Boom Sason in her best-selling hot fandango for your long-weekend tanning session.
