Shutter happy: Photographer Patrick Diokno's Polaroid photos evoked a sense of adventure.

MANILA, Philippines — Long before one-hour processing and digital cameras blessed us with instant gratification in photographic form, there was the Polaroid — a creation so iconic, it’s become a generonym for instant analog photography.

Its true-blue classic model is the Land Camera 1000, named for Polaroid founder and creator Edwin H. Land and better known as the OneStep. And to celebrate the brand’s 80th anniversary, it’s been revamped as the OneStep 2 i-Type, the first all-new release from the Polaroid Originals line.

A continuation of the Impossible Project, which seeks to keep Land’s vision and legacy alive, Polaroid Originals saw the distribution of one-of-a-kind refurbished vintage cameras that work like new, along with black and white and full-color film that until recently had been difficult to come by.

The OneStep 2 has all the nostalgic value of yesterday’s Land Camera — not to mention its original minimalist rainbow design — with a modern touch: it’s simple, fuss-free, and ready right out of the box. Features include a built-in flash, a self-timer and a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 60 days, making for the perfect on-the-go gadget for particularly sentimental folks who want something more tangible to remember a moment by.

The Polaroid Originals OneStep 2 i-Type was launched last Nov. 8 at The Gallery in Greenbelt 5, coinciding with opening of an exhibit featuring vintage cameras and accompanying images from Film Folk and Satchmi as well as Polaroids taken by professionals and enthusiasts.

A classic reinvented: Polaroid makes a comeback with its new OneStep 2 i-Type camera.

Photographer Patrick Diokno’s photos evoked a certain sense of adventure, showcasing locations and scenes that sparked his interest. Chef and photographer Nicco Santos made use of black and white film and tight composition to bring out his signature sensual style. Blogger Ida Anduyan’s set is full of personality and color — almost as if her Instagram had come to life.

There have been lots of throwback trends and gimmicks in 2017, but with a return to form that’s as groundbreaking as it is fashionable, we might just have to give it up to Polaroid for Comeback of the Year.

The Polaroid Originals OneStep 2 i-Type camera comes in white and graphite and runs on all types of Polaroid Originals i-Type Film and 600 Film. It’s now available at Bratpack stores in Greenbelt 5, Shangri-La Plaza and Alabang Town Center.
