Climb every mountain — with the right gear

MANILA, Philippines — Mountain-climbing, trekking, hiking — these are a few of my least favorite things. I tried to climb a mountain a grand total of one time, and suffice to say I died many times on the way up. It was supposedly an easy climb to negotiate, but I was clearly not prepared for the incline. My ratty old running shoes were so old and unused that the soles were falling apart; my backpack was more suitable for the urban setting; and my clothes were a poor excuse for hiking wear.

I eventually made it, but I certainly could have used a little more help.
