The myth of certainty

FINDING REFUGE AND STRENGTH - Dr. Harold J. Sala - The Philippine Star

Is there anything at all that is certain in our world? What about God? Can He be counted on, no matter what happens? “Yes and no!” I would answer. “Whoa,” you say, quickly asking, “Did I hear you say, ‘No!’?” Here’s why: There’s an uncertainty attached to the certainty of following God – one that has no fear attached to it, but is one that says, “Now, I just wonder how God is going to solve this one?”

There are times when you follow God’s voice and He upends your life and sends you on an adventure that you had never even thought about. Remember, for instance, the uncertainty of Abraham when God called him and told him to pack up because He would lead him to a place that He would show him. And how about Jonah’s uncertainty when God told Him to go to Nineveh and proclaim His message? Or think about Elijah’s when God sent him to wait out the drought of the brook, not knowing where to go when it dried up.

Life is uncertain for everybody. The difference is this: Are you at the mercy of an unfriendly, uncertain world – one that couldn’t care less about you – with no guide or presence to direct your path? Or would you rather walk through the valley, knowing that your life matters to God, understanding that He who cannot lie has promised that He will never leave or forsake you in a world of uncertainty?

Certainty in an uncertain world is a myth, but the fear is removed when your life is in God’s hands and His firm hand guides and directs you day by day. Who cares about tomorrow’s uncertainty when you know God will be there to take you through it?
