Opinion

A united Philippines

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

At last elections are over and the people have spoken. Soon, as President Duterte steps down from office, we, the people of the Republic, look forward to a new administration whose unique message was built on unity.

Considering that our identity as a nation is still young and needs further molding, thanks to President Rodrigo Duterte, the Filipino was awakened to the fact that we, despite our archipelagic build up, are one people filled with deep but diverse cultures that very much makes us who we are as Filipinos. Regardless of whether we come from Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao, we are only one Filipino under the same sky and again, if not for PRRD, we probably wouldn’t be where we are today in terms of our understanding of one another.

The Philippines, as history teaches us,  has been colonized for very long periods of time and apart from this, the wounds of WWII are still very much ingrained in our system, with living war veterans who still remind us today of their valor in such dark and trying times. In other words, we’ve been through a lot as a people and with this one can say, it has left us searching.

As part of Generation x, the generation that is supposedly “in charge” of bridging the gap between the boomers and the millennials, perhaps even the Gen Z, I tend to think that this job of “connecting” has been rather challenging, considering the perpetual search for our own identity. At most, this is my opinion and I believe this is still our concern. Therefore, I believe at this point, and after much chewing and digesting on the purpose behind the call for unity, it is only through this that many of us can push forward from what was already begun.

Inclusivity for one can further help us understand why it is important that we are united as, after all, one can never unite if not everyone is included. It’s just simple deductive reasoning I would surmise yet, as simple as it could be, human behavior must be aligned to the goal that is best meant for the common good. The call has been made and it is time that we answer this call. The people have spoken and our readiness must be combined with action.

As we enter into a new administration, it is my hope that we the people continue to act on this cry for unity. It is still the biggest call for us Filipinos. We must all want to be a part of one united Philippines and the only way to do it is to work together for the good of all.
