Women’s Month 2020

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

Every March we commemorate the impact of women throughout the world in a celebration we know as Women’s Month.

The Philippine Commission on Women celebrates this month annually with activities aimed to further inspire and empower women of all ages to achieve gender equality. The theme “We make change work for women” has been the annual theme for a few years since 2017.

It is exciting to note that the Philippines ranked first in Asia and 8th in the world in terms of gender equal opportunities, according to a report by the World Economic Forum which, however slipped for the first time in 2019 in the global gender index.

Nevertheless, however, the Philippines remains to be the most gender equal country in Asia.

Under our current theme, government agencies such as the DENR, DILG and DepEd highlight the empowerment of women as “active contributors to and claimholders of development” which is also rooted on the commitment of ‘Malasakit at Pagbabago.”

The Philippine Army on the other hand is celebrating Women’s Month with activities that promote and advocate advocacy Juana, social media exhibit of army women stories and a Juana Leadership Conference wherein the inspiring Philippine Army Women for 2020 will be awarded.

All in all, putting both the past and present together, Women’s Month commemorates the vital role of women in the world. Being a single mother such as myself in this highly competitive world is very challenging, yet many developments throughout the years have also proven to be also empowering.

The celebration of Women’s Month has proven that women have very valuable roles to play in nation building. In spite of the challenges many women still face today, opportunities for growth in our sector has enabled us to become more confident, empowered and successful.

To all the women out there, be they the homemakers, our beloved elders, business women, women in media, women in public service, women in the areas of health and social welfare and women in law enforcement and national defense, March is always a steady reminder for us to continue to rise and become the pillars which society can steadfastly build on for strength, and for progress. Happy Women’s Month!
