What would you do differently if you were reborn?

For those who have watched La La Land, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s latest hit movie reminds us that where we are now, and where we will be in the future, are the results of the choices we make. There are times we think of what could have been or what we would do differently if we were reborn, but in the end, for as long as our decisions feel that they are the best, not only for us but for our loved ones, then we will have little or no room for regret.

The one thing I would do differently is spend a little more time for myself. While living a life of serving others is something I would never trade for the world, it is important for all of us to value moments of solitude. Solitude allows your body to catch up to your mind and allows your brain to rest.

If I could only turn back time, I would have been more affectionate, caring and loving to my father who passed away just before my college graduation. I appreciate all the blessings that God has given me and I couldn’t ask for more. But if I were reborn, I would be a professional basketball player. Instead of dribbling top legislative issues, I’d be dribbling with my team to win a championship. It’s an honor to represent our people in the Senate, to inspire them and steer this nation towards progress. I think basketball also inspires and moves people through teamwork, trust, commitment, discipline, friendship — and of course, the will to win. In fact, I’ve learned life’s powerful lessons playing a tough basketball match and the most important of them all: prepare hard, give it your best shot and you will emerge victorious.

When I was 15 years old, I had the option to stay in LA with my dad and go to a performing arts school where I could have studied voice, acting and dance. Instead, I went back to my TV career on That’s Entertainment and shortly after, released my very first album. Of course, I’m super thankful for the wonderful things that have happened since then but I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had invested in perfecting my craft and made a go of it in the US when I was younger. If I were reborn, I would change my course just to find out.

I wouldn’t change a thing. On the professional front, I would still want to continue to make a difference through my advocacy and initiatives on country competitiveness. On the personal front, I have everyone I need and want in my life — people who have taught me valuable lessons in life, have either inspired me to become a better person or have motivated me, and made me wiser and more resilient.

If I were reborn I would make it a point to listen mindfully and well, especially to those who matter most in my life. I have this tendency to tune out in the face of opposing views and zone out when people don’t hold my interest.
