Sheryn is cancer-free & back for good
Sheryn Regis: I fi rmly believed that I would be healed

It didn’t matter anymore for Sheryn Regis the possibility that she won’t be able to sing again when she decided to undergo throat surgery due to cancer.

The Cebuana singer, who migrated to the States 10 years ago, looked back on what happened to her over the past years during her guesting on Tonight with Boy Abunda (TWBA). She shared that she went home to Cebu in 2016 and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She added that she was supposed to do some projects but none of them pushed through.

“I had a lump here (pointing to her neck) that looked like an Adam’s apple,” she recalled. “And I wasn’t aware it was cancerous until I felt so tired after a performance that I almost fainted.”

Sheryn immediately underwent a biopsy and it was confirmed to be malignant. “Sobrang hindi ko alam kung iiyak o sisigaw ako ganun ‘yung feeling that time.”

The dreadful thought of ending her singing career was on her mind “because I knew surgery could affect my voice. There’s a patient who had undergone the same procedure and still had no voice even after six months. And mine was cancerous so I didn’t care anymore kung mawala ang boses ko as long as I continue to live.”

Thankfully, the operation was successful and her doctor advised her to refrain from singing until six months. However, Sheryn couldn’t imagine herself taking a break from singing that long. “Buhay ko ang pagkanta so after a month or three weeks, kumanta ako for Sto. Nino. I firmly believed that I would be healed.”

With her strong faith, Sheryn was declared cancer-free. She continued her life in the US as a singer and a TV host two years after her operation. “I hosted the magazine talk show Chit Chat Houston in 2018. I also worked as a teacher kaya nagamit ko ‘yung natapos ko sa Pilipinas. Nagturo ako sa kindergarten, elementary and middle school.”

Fast-forward to the present, Sheryn is making a showbiz comeback. In fact, her recent concert, Back to Love, received positive feedback from music fans. But she denied rumors circulating in the gossip mill that her decision to make a comeback had something to do with her marriage life.

Sheryn was honest enough to tell that she’s not yet ready to share things that concern her love life. Instead, she revealed that it was her daughter Sweety who convinced her to fly back to the Philippines and resume her interrupted singing career.

Asked if she’s staying for good, the singer replied with a resounding, “Yes.”

For those unfamiliar, Sheryn was the voice behind some of the ABS-CBN teleserye theme songs before she flew to the US some 10 years ago. She popularized such songs as Come On In Out Of The Rain, Kailan Kaya and Sabihin Mo Sa Akin.
