A song for Doña Aurora

REMEMBER WHEN? - Danny Dolor - The Philippine Star
A song for Doña Aurora

The Doña Aurora in reference to the head of this column is Doña Aurora Aragon Quezon, wife of President Manuel Luis Quezon (during the Commonwealth, from the ‘30s to the early ‘40s). ‘La Primera Dama de Filipinas’ (First Lady of the Philippines), Doña Aurora was loved, admired, respected, revered.

Francisco Santiago wrote a song for Doña Aurora, with lyrics in three languages: Spanish by Jesus Balmori, Tagalog by G. Santiago-Cuino and English by F. Carballo.

Remember When? reproduces the English lyrics of the song dedicated to the First Lady, simply titled Aurora.

In praise I sing of the native aid of my land,

Her beauty rare and of her virtues grand.

Her love is pure for her heart is loyal and true,

Faithful to her plighted word that time will never rue.

Listen to her voice, tender and with kindness singing,

Worthy of the pearl of the gay Orient dawning,

Sweet in her caresses, with soul sincere and trusting.

But you should beware, ne’er her faith betray,

She’ll defend her honor, and cost what it may.

Oh, what goddess fair, and tender soul,

With a pious heart so guileless and whole!

Human virtue’s light, charming love’s delight,

Radiant hope abiding, hope of life so bright.

O enchanting pearl of this Orient strand,

Pride and lasting joy of our native land!         — RKC
