I grew up in an earlier time. I still believe that that there is a kind of language one should not use and that there are things that one should not say out loud in public, more so, on the air. And in the case of the 27th MTV Movie & TV Awards shown last June 18, such language and hints and motions, etc. etc., were also on the Net, in a cloud, here, there and everywhere. Times have really changed.

Aside from that though, the only around two-hour presentation was one of the most entertaining ever. Other awards shows, take note. And this is despite the fact that there were only two musical numbers, Nick Jonas and Mustard with their recent release Anywhere and Chloe X Halle with The Kids Are Alright.

Credit goes to showbiz’s hottest young comedian today, Tiffany Haddish. She was daring and as quick with her mind and with her tongue. There is nothing off-limits with this girl. So send the kids early to bed if you intend to watch the replay and then enjoy this Tiff with all your might.

Black Panther, the movie that launched Chadwick Boseman to Marvel Superhero immortality, and Stranger Things, the creepy show about kids coping with an eerie environment topped the list of winners at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Black Panther, now one of the biggest grossing films of all time, got four popcorn trophies out of its seven nominations including the much sought after Best Movie and the Best Performance in a Movie for the Black Panther himself, Chadwick.

Meanwhile, the Netflix show Stranger Things got four wins out of its six nods including Best Show and Best Performance in a Show for its talented fast-growing up star Millie Bobby Brown. Millie was indisposed but made an acceptance speech where she took on the bullies that made her quit posting online. No way is she going to give them any satisfaction.

Standing up for what is right and for what one believes in emerged as the theme of the show with special emphasis on being colored or of not having the usual sex gender. In fact, it can be said that the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards was a night of triumph for blacks and queers.

And now here is the honor roll of the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards:

•Movie of the Year (Presented by Toyota) — Black Panther

•Best Performance in a Movie — Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther)

•Best Show — Stranger Things

•Best Performance in a Show — Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things)

•Best Hero — Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther)

•Best Villain — Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther)

•Best Kiss — Nick Robinson and Keiynan Lonsdale (Love Simon)

•Most Frightened Performance: Noah Schnapp (Stranger Things)

•Best Reality Series/Franchise — The Kardashians

Michael B. Jordan is recognized Best Villain for his acting in Black Panther

•Scene Stealer — Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom, Riverdale)

•Best On-Screen Team — Finn Wolfhard (Richie), Sophia Lillis (Beverly), Jaeden Lieberher (Bill), Jack Dylan Grazer (Eddie), Wyatt Oleff, (Stanley), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ben) and Chosen Jacobs (Mike), IT

•Best Music Documentary — Gaga: Five Foot Two

•Best Fight — Gal Gadot vs. German Soldiers (Wonder Woman)

The MTV Trailblazer Award went to actress, producer and screenwriter Lena Waithe of Master of None and The Chi. Chris Pratt, the star of The Lego Movie, The Magnificent 7, Passengers and who is a pop phenomenon as Star Lord of two Guardians of the Galaxy flicks and of Avengers: Infinity War was conferred the MTV Generation Award.

And now it is time for me to return to listing down all of the cultural references that Haddish showed, made mention of or naughtily teased the audience into remembering. How she squeezed in all these amidst her hosting chores is a marvel.

The Throne Challenge of Black Panther with Lil Rel Howery of Get Out and Tiff’s Girls Trip posse, Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith; the Light saber duel with Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi; Cardi B in preggy glory singing Bodak Yellow; Holly Golightly in the little black dress. Scarlett O’Hara in the green velvet drapes outfit. Megan Markle’s wedding dress. Tiffany’s own Alexander McQueen gown which she has already worn to other awards shows; Jennifer Lopez famous green printed gown with a low back, low front and high hemline. Waterfalls by TLC. And many more.
