Kinky Boots and other treats

The Atlantis production of Kinky Boots, directed by Bobby Garcia, is back at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at the RCBC Plaza in Makati and will run until March 18 in a limited return stint

One day, somewhere in the future, Nyoy Volante can tell his grandchildren that there was a time when he wore red, high-heeled boots and sold out a show. The show was Kinky Boots where the actor and folk singer played the unforgettable part of Lola. This is another feather added to Nyoy’s festively decorated acting cap. It joins his brilliant turn as Frankie Valli of The Four Seasons in Jersey Boys two years ago.

Truth to tell, Nyoy, who is one of the most talented actors in theater today, did not only sell out a show. He sold out lots of shows. Still, it turned out that those were not enough for the many who want to see him do Lola. Well, here is great news for them.

Nyoy, despite the corns and bunions, is going to be Lola again. The Atlantis production of Kinky Boots, directed by Bobby Garcia, is back at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at the RCBC Plaza in Makati and will run until March 18 in a limited return stint. For tickets, call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.

The Tony and Grammy-winning Kinky Boots was written by Harvey Fierstein, the Tony-winning actor and playwright for the likes of Hairspray, La Cage aux Foiles and Torch Song Trilogy, with music by the big Grammy, Emmy, VMA-winning pop star Cyndi Lauper of the hit tunes She Bop, All Through The Night, Money Changes Everything, True Colors, Change Of Heart and I Drove All Night. She now also owns a Tony Best Musical Score trophy for the music she turned out for Kinky Boots.

Calum Scott will perform in a free-entry showcase at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-La Plaza at 6 p.m. tomorrow, March 4

Set in an economically struggling town, Kinky Boots is a tale of passion and acceptance. It tells the story of Charlie, a young man who inherits a shoe factory that is losing business because nobody buys conservative brogues anymore. He becomes friends with Lola who convinces him to go instead into making high-heeled boots for transvestites. Those kinky boots save the business and the jobs of many. It also causes Charlie and the workers to see Lola and her friends in a different and certainly equal and most appreciative light.

Also along for the repeat ride is the same astounding cast of the local production led by Laurence Mossman as Charlie, Yannah Laurel as Lauren and Tricia Canilao as Nicola.

Playing at the LRI Art ++ Pavilion on N. Garcia St. in Bel-Air, Makati starting March 8 is Tres Pares. This is an exhibit of more than 40 stunning art pieces by three visual artists of varied persuasions, photographer/painter Quincy Castillo, film director Nelson Cruz and Manila Sound legend Dennis Garcia of the band Hotdog.

The trio promises those who will attend their show that despite the fact that they will not charge entrance fees, they will still: “…pamper you, feed and hydrate you, set the mood with music, as you are treated to some of the most interesting works of art you’ve never seen.”

Tres Pares will be on exhibit at the LRI Art ++ Pavilion on N. Garcia St. in Bel-Air, Makati starting March 8

Prepare to spend as the trio has donated three paintings that will be on sale with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to the Philippine Cancer Society. Of course, there is also the strong chance that you might want to own one or more of the works on exhibit.

Meanwhile, Calum Scott will be performing in a free-entry showcase at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-La Plaza at 6 p.m. tomorrow, March 4. The British singer and songwriter zoomed to worldwide popularity after he auditioned for the reality show Britain’s Got Talent in 2015 and received the rarely dispensed Golden Buzzer from the formidable Simon Cowell.

Scott did not win the competition but his being sent directly to the finals firmly established his reputation as a promising young talent. Aside from this, his audition piece, a dreamy take on Robyn’s Dancing On My Own became a huge seller. He is now on a world tour to launch his debut album titled Only Human from the Universal MCA label.
