Cebu X Postura Project

RAMP DIVAS - Sian Maynard -

It sounds easy enough: wear at least one thing that is local or locally designed everyday for 30 days. The Postura Project is the brainchild of four local fashionista bloggers who believe in supporting the local fashion scene by launching a website where they would post their Postura Project outfits daily for a month, including a small feature on the local item of the day. One of the best parts of the blog however is that this fab four brought their own individual styles to the table; from advertising creative Knox Balbastro’s “ethnic Pinoy inspired creative work wear” to host/model Sarah Meier’s “trend-free, ghetto fab, minimalist, bohemian” feel.

Lately, the internet has ushered in a new platform for budding fashionistas and trend-setters, giving them a chance to be heard—or should I say—be seen. Websites like Pose, Lookbook, Polyvore or even the ubiquitous Instagram have brought so many fashion personalities to the forefront and better yet, the brands and designers behind the clothes. With the stage set and the gauntlet thrown, it’s our turn to do our part. Our homegrown talent has grown by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years and has become readily accessible to everyone who is on the lookout for the latest trends with that distinct Filipino flair. Here are a few Cebuano brands that are at the forefront of fashion, loud and proud about it, to help you on your way:

1. Rhipstop Clothing - Made in Cebu and worn worldwide. This isn’t just a clothing brand, it’s practically a lifestyle. All about exclusive individuality, Rhipstop boasts of not just your regular everyday retail wear but also clothing for the active Cebuano from skating to wakeboarding.

2. What A Girl Wants - This chic and fresh retail brand is practically a godsend for all Cebuana fashionistas out there, with trend-setting and affordable clothes that can meet anyone's personal style from preppy cool to carefree hipster.

3. Mia Arcenas Clothing - For the woman who has impeccable style and seeks quality, this is the way to go. Designed by Mia Arcenas herself, the epitome of the well-dressed and stylish Cebuana, her collections have always been unique and 100% Filipino. “Most of the things I make are one of a kind,” Mia says. “People want to be unique, to separate themselves from the rest; with that said, I like to cater to that specific market, where they are more conscious about standing out. Women who understand the essence of fashion, the details, the quality, the fun and experimentation that goes along with it.”

If there was ever a time to be a “local and vocal” advocate, now is a good time as any. You can start by checking out your own closets to see what local brands you have, and the fashion scene around you. You will be surprised to find out how many truly talented brands are out there. To check out Postura Project and submit your own Pinoy Pride looks, you can visit them at www.posturaproject.com. It's time to be local and vocal, and prove that with the help of our creative local fashion scene — the possibilities are endless.
