UP Cebu High: Our home

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

On June 26, 2022, UP High School Cebu experienced a momentous day that every Isko and Iska had been anticipating for months. It was the Golden Jubilee of UP High!

Rewind, decades have passed since they were idealistic young folks whose dreams came true. However, the enthusiasm they had back then, when they were so young, is still present today. They are still incredibly delighted to share pleasant memories even decades afterwards. The UP High Cebu alumni had a sense of nostalgia when they saw one another because they wanted to relive the times when they were still in high school.

Adults who are seasoned professionals in their fields, including lawmakers, police and military officers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, teachers, accountants, business owners, artists, filmmakers, web designers, priests, pastors, nuns, and others. They are all equally devoted to their alma mater, the institution that aided in molding their impressionable minds into what they are now. They are currently living out their dreams. The goals that, for others, would be very difficult to achieve for a variety of reasons, primarily lack of access to a top-notch education or lack of resources. But once a student enters in UP, the institution will lay the groundwork—strong character and a commitment to excellence.

These professionals once had such high goals of leaving their mark on society. However, it is true that they are now using their skills and abilities to help the public. They have demonstrated how UP, armed with their talents, skills, and values, has in one way or another driven them to pursue their aspirations.

The event is dubbed as "Tunob," which figuratively represents a mile of footprints because even though they have been to many places and countries, they still yearn to return home so intensely. Even for individuals who did not complete UP High but at least had stepped and gained entrance to UP High education, the Tunob event has provided a warm environment. It was a chance to gather and share recollections rather than brag about what one had accomplished in life.

For some, the desire to relive their youth is more of an overall feeling of nostalgia for the tales and memories that may be brought back to life through reminiscing.

Every Isko and Iska would only get the chance to experience celebrating the 50th Golden Anniversary of UP Cebu High School once in their lives. They were delighted to see their professors and classmates again and to remember of those who are no longer with us as well. If only they were here with us, it may have been a different kind of fun, enthusiasm, and belonging.

The occasion was made possible on a global scale by using the wonder of technology to create several hubs where everyone could say hello to the batches and take in the celebration.

Thank you and congratulations to everyone who supported, helped, and made a difference in the celebration's success. To the event's movers: the alumni led by Allan Nazareno, Julie Itaas, May Christina Bugash, Joey Alberto, and Darmae Maningo-Tan; the UP High School faculty headed by Dr. Catherine Rodel; and to our retirees: Dr. Elisa Lapa, Prof. Erlinda Gallo, Prof. Fe Reyes, and Dr. Primitivo Ereno, who selflessly and constantly contributed their time and advices.

“Malayong lupain, amin mang marating,

Di rin magbabago ang damdamin…”

Mabuhi ug padayon, UP CEBU High School!
