Let's put Marcos issue to rest once and for all

TO THE QUICK - Jerry Tundag - The Freeman

The elections this May present us with the best opportunity to finally put the Marcos issue to rest once and for all. We cannot go on forever being divided as a nation simply because there are people who find it politically expedient and profitable to keep reviving the Marcos issue every time there is an election coming up.

This is true even in years when there is no Marcos running for a significant national position. There will always be politicians who will run on no other platform than to supposedly continue to fight a dictatorship that has long passed into oblivion. The formula to end this in May 2022 is simple: DO NOT VOTE FOR BONGBONG MARCOS! That's it. Nothing less, nothing more.

But on your way to the polls a little over three months from now, if you are anti-Marcos and are not voting for Bongbong, please give the other Filipinos who do not share your sentiments a little respect. Do not foist your bigotry, hypocrisy, and self-righteousness on the others because, like you, they also have the right to choose and vote for whom they please.

If you cannot sleep at night because of your unquenchable hate and anger, do not expect others who live more balanced lives to also lose sleep over a hate and anger that they do not feel. If you must campaign against Bongbong, then campaign against him with all your might. Use all your wealth and your wits to make sure he does not win.

But for God's sake let the other Filipinos be. If you happen to inhabit one of the 1,700 islands that, by Leni Robredo's count make up the Philippine archipelago, please consider that the rest of the Filipinos who inhabit the remaining 5,400 or so islands also want to exercise their own free will in the May 2022 elections. We do not want another dictatorship, do we? Or are we under the tyranny of the minority?

The best judge of people are their own selves. You cannot win people over and make them vote against Marcos by calling them dumb, ignorant, corrupt, unsophisticated, or even unworthy of their own right. They know themselves. They know what they want, what is good for them. You cannot tell them what to do, especially if you demean and insult them.

I happen to know of certain types, people who are being driven by a consuming desire to belong, people who cannot stand on their own feet to fight and defend the choices they make. These are the people who are most vociferous in calling others names. They are the ones most aggressive in trying to put other people down as inferior because they do not happen to be anti-Marcos and are therefore immoral and sinful in their eyes.

Speaking of sinfulness and immorality, the anti-Marcos forces, especially those I just mentioned who just assumed their positions in order to belong, seem so obsessed with their perfection and immaculateness that they went so far as to project their bet as a saint, worthy of the company of Christ in one promotional artwork that has probably since been taken down in shame. Fakery can truly drive people crazy.

Again, let us put this Marcos issue to rest once and for all this May. IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANOTHER MARCOS IN POWER THEN DO NOT VOTE FOR BONGBONG. It is as simple as that. Use all your wealth and wits to forestall his ascendancy. But your enemy is not the Filipino people. If the rest of the Filipinos want to vote according to their own choice, let them be. Do not disrespect them. Or everything will get back to you in the end.
