Penthel First 5 rules inaugural CBL season
CEBU, Philippines — The Penthel First 5 Lounge pummeled Eye Browse Optical, 73-53, in their one-sided final match to emerge as champion in the Cebu Basketball League (CBL) Season 1 billed as Bruno’s Cup last Sunday night at the Sacred Heart Center Sports Club.
Danilo Contado, Jr. pumped in 24 points, three rebounds, and three steals in an all-around hardcourt brilliance for Penthel First 5 that made him the hands down choice as the Finals Most Valuable Player.
Penthel First 5 never looked back since racing to a hot 19-12 start.
Up by just six at halftime, 32-26, Penthel First 5 battered Eye Browse Optical in the third period, 18-11, before closing the match with a 22-15 bang resulting to a 20-point blowout.
Christian Gallarde, the season MVP, finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a losing effort for Eye Browse Optical.
Organized by Mardion N. Delima, who also serves as the league’s commissioner, the inaugural CBL season kicked off in February 2020 but was abruptly halted for two years because of the global pandemic.
“I think this is the longest league in Cebu kay nag-start mi February 2020 unya karon pa nahuman tungod sa Covid,” said Delima in slight jest. “Pasalamat ko sa akong mga partners nga sila si Ricky Almasa ug Edward Bia kay dili ni ma-successful among liga kung wala sila.”
