Naki Warriors score anew in PCAP tourney
CEBU, Philippines — The Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors notched their second straight win at the expense of Davao Executives Chess Society in the second round of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Open Conference last Wednesday night via chess.com platform.
Led by Saudi-based Cebuano National Master Elwin Retanal, Woman International Master Bernadette Galas and the ever sharp Anthony Makinano, the Naki Warriors crushed the guest team from Davao, 16.5-4.5.
The Naki Warriors, who are also manned by Michael Joseph Pagaran, Linky Yap, Brylle Arellano, and Allan Pason, prevailed in the blitz segment, 5.5-1.5, before trouncing Davao in rapid play, 11-3, for the 12-point rout.
Still, Lapu-Lapu is at far seventh in the Southern Division standings with a 2-3 win-loss record.
The Toledo City Trojans, meanwhile, further wallowed down the cellar after absorbing their fifth straight defeat in as many starts at the hands of All-Filipino Conference champion Laguna Heroes, 4-17.
Grandmaster Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr. led Laguna’s charge after edging Toledo’s top board player NM Rommel Ganzon in their rapid duel.
GM John Paul Gomez, Woman NM Jean Karen Enriquez, FIDE Master Jose Efren Bagamasmad, and Vince Angelo Medina also delivered the goods in Laguna’s 13-point thrashing of the Trojans.
Laguna thus joined the San Juan Predators, Pasig King Pirates, and the Manila Indios Bravos at the top of North leaderboard with identical 5-0 slates. — EBV
