CEBU, Philippines —  A former criminology student who robbed and murdered his aunt and wounded another relative in Aloguinsan town Sunday was arrested during a hot pursuit operation in Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City yesterday afternoon.

James Harvey Kilaton Nengasca, 22, resident of Barangay Bonbon, Aloguinsan, Cebu, was arrested by the joint operatives of Provincial Intelligence Unit, Police Drug Enforcement Unit, Cebu Provincial Mobile Force Company, Talisay Police Station, and Aloguinsan Police Station.

Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) deputy provincial director for operation Police Lt. Col. Mark Gifter Sucalit said that Nengasca’s presence in Talisay City was immediately known by them because they have alerted all the police stations in the province.

“Alerto na ang atong mga police stations. Kung naay mo-fit sa similar description ana, tawag agad, mag-buo og team ug dili lang mag kumpyansa,” Sucalit said.

According to Sucalit, they received initial information about the presence of a person in Talisay City that resembles the suspect prompting them to verify. After validation, the joint police operatives swooped down on Nengasca resulting in his arrest.

The police recovered from his possession a caliber .45 pistol and a pack of suspected shabu.  The police, however, failed to recover the pair of scissors that he used as murder weapon.

Nengasca fled from Aloguinsan after robbing and killing his aunt--Arsenia Nengasca Alidani— on Sunday, June 26. His other aunt, Belen Nengasca Biton, was also wounded during the incident.

Nengasca admitted stabbing his aunt after the latter refused to lend him money. “Nihangyo ko niya mohulam og kwarta, sir, kay napildi ko’s tari ba, singko mil,

niuli ko kay nahadlok ko kay wala koy ikabayad og huwam mao nihangyo ko niya,” Nengasca said.

“Wala pa gyud ko molakaw nga wala ko pahulma. Nag sige pa gyud ko og hangyo niya,” he added.

Nengasca said he lost his mind and killed his aunt unintentionally.

“Wala na gyud kos akong huna-huna kutob nalang sa makuptan nako, na blangko na gyud ko ato,” he said.

Nengasca denied he was using drugs before the incident. According to him, he just needed the money to pay for the wager he lost in the cockfight.

Meanwhile, the police are looking at the possibility of filing criminal charges against the people who harbored Nengasca in Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City.

“If the evidence warrants, then we will file. But, initial information nato, ang mga tao kay blinded gyud sila kay wa man gyud siya magpaila nga siya nipatay,” Sucalit said. — Dominic I. Dilao and Rubie Mae T. Sollano, CNU Intern, FPL (FREEMAN)
