CEBU, Philippines —  A total of 45 tons of mixed garbage were collected during the 6th Cebu City-wide clean-up challenge over the weekend.

The total collected waste by the Department of Public Services (DPS) may be lesser than that of September, but Reymar Hijara, subcommittee chairperson for operations of the Cebu City Coastal Management Task Force (CMT), was grateful to all who supported the program.

At least 3,800 individuals showed up to help in the said activity.

Volunteers include City Hall employees, barangay workers, private companies, fraternities, civic organizations and other groups.

"Atong nakita nga daghan gyud ang  naghuna-huna sa future sa atong dakbayan Kinahanglan nga ato gyud nga limpyohan ang atong palibot," said Hijara.

The Mahiga Creek, Tejero bridge, Guadalupe river are, Pasil, Bulacao river, and the South Road Properties (SRP) were the focused areas of the coastal and river cleanup drive.

Aside from keeping it clean, organizers believe that this also helps one’s mental health.

With such activity, flooding will also be prevented.

It may be the last city-wide clean-up for 2021, Vice mayor Hontiveros had challenged everyone including the youth to keep their surroundings clean, not only for a day, but for always.  — Sanden J. Anadia, KQD (FREEMAN)
