To sir and ma'am with love

READERS' VIEWS - The Freeman

Teachers play a significant part in our lives. They perform multiple functions as an educator of young minds besides a loco parentis role at the school. This extraordinary profession and a vocation suffer more or less appreciation and recognition in society today.

In the Philippines, National Teachers' month starts from September 5 to October 5, 2021. But World Teacher's Day is celebrated on October 5, 2021. It is a global observance but not a public holiday. The celebration date may vary according to the country. The United States celebrates it during the first whole week of May, while in the United Kingdom on October 5.

On Teacher's Day, the services of teachers and their contribution to education are acknowledged, and their role and importance for the development of students and society are appreciated.

Teacher's Day is an occasion that pays tribute to the teachers and tends to resolve some of the issues regarding their profession and hence tries to attract the brightest young minds towards this profession.

Traditionally, on Teacher's Day, students perform different activities at school to pay gratitude and amuse their teachers like recitation of poems, mimicry of pedagogical skills of their teachers, singing, and the playing of games together. On many occasions, students offer gifts to teachers. They can give a hand-written card or flower to their teacher.

More than 100 countries commemorate World Teacher's Day, and each country holds its celebrations. UNESCO allocates a theme for this day every year. This year's theme is "Teachers: Leading in crisis, re-imagining the future." UNESCO presented this theme for teacher's day in respect for their determined and diligent efforts in the crucial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today many will celebrate World and National Teachers Day virtually or with a limited audience with joy and a heavy heart. Joy because the institution's ultimate mission, vision, and goals to provide education continue amidst pandemic, the most challenging period in world history.

We have a heavy heart because we lost some of our dear teachers, leaders, and learners to the pandemic. We mourn the loss of our brothers and sisters in professions. And to some of our invaluable clients who supported us through the years. We recognize those fallen teachers for their excellent work, effort, and outstanding contribution to education in performing their duties and responsibilities.

Our teachers are like the medical frontliners and OFWs, who deserve to be called modern-day heroes. They live and die to serve so the young generation will have a better future. To sir and ma'am with love, my deep gratitude, respect, and salute!
