The winning Filipino spirit

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

We see a redeeming factor once again when our spirit is down due to the pandemic and the uncertainty of what will happen next. Even when we feel we are on the verge of shattering, of falling apart, a light shines in, not just to remind us of something positive, but also to tell us that life must go on.

We know that it is not unique to a particular race, but human nature dictates that we always seek ways out of a bad situation. We always uncover methods to make tomorrow better, it's only a matter of how long it will take us to get there.

Hidilyn Diaz's narrative has all of the components of a success story, just like any other. But the key to it is determination, and the fact that her spirit has remained intact despite the numerous hurdles she has faced. Oftentimes she feels a lack of support from the people or institutions she anticipates to gain from her wins. And so apart from physically preparing herself, she is also diverted from worrying about how and when help will arrive. Her participation in one international sporting event after another is a testimonial to her tenacity. We know for certain that there were significant obstacles in the way of obtaining the gold.

Quitters never win, and winners never quit. This axiom may appear cliched, but just because it's been said so many times doesn't mean it's not correct. The ability to persevere, whether referred to as determination, grit, or good old-fashioned hard work, is an essential component of success.

According to current study, determination is more crucial than intelligence. This is because intelligence, and the rest of our talent, is a passive trait, whereas determination is an active quality. Determination has the power to change things. Although one's natural talents may open doors, one must put in the necessary effort to make those doors open. Hard work is so crucial that even if a person just has ordinary talent can turn it into success.

Determination is what propels one forward. It's all about focusing on a specific goal. And as long as one has a goal, one can develop paths that lead to that objective, bringing one closer to the desired success.

Determination overcomes failure. What happens if we run into obstacles on the path to the goal? We push through them or we blaze a new path. It helps us keep going regardless of what’s put in front of us. With determination, failure is just a diversion. It’s not an end. We are in control of our lives. Even in the most difficult moments, we still get to decide what to do. Believe in our ability to reach our goals.

Jealousy of others’ success will just slow us down. Instead of resenting what others achieve, see it as something to celebrate. After all, every time others reach their goal, it’s proof that goals are reachable.

To stay motivated, we should set goals for ourselves to achieve. Achieving a large goal is akin to completing a marathon in many respects. We won't be able to focus on all 30 miles at the same time. It's better to focus on a single mile at a time.

Hidilyn's Olympic victory is a wake-up call for the Filipino character, as it reflects our determination. We shall not give up since triumph is always a possibility in the end
