Delta is coming

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Although the health department has not confirmed yet that the Delta variant has reached Central Visayas, the local government units are bracing for its arrival. According to studies, this variant also has a high transmission rate which means it could multiply faster than the ordinary variant. While the cases in the region are skyrocketing right now, it could be probably attributed to the mutation of the virus. We could also say it could be because people are neglecting the basic protocols. Come to think of it, it has already been more than a year since quarantine started. Cut us some slack.

I swear this new variant is something to fear and the cases are getting closer to home. Over the weekend, I witnessed a house in our village that was cordoned off. That shiny red tape was a message to everyone that we would partially lose our liberty if ever we would also test positive. We might as well tone down the movement outside our homes. But it feels so good to be able to smell fresh air and meet old friends. Heck, it is one for Instagram. Is it worth it? You can bet your life.

My worry isn't as bad though, because I just got fully vaccinated. Getting two doses of the vaccine doesn’t automatically mean that I will be safe from infection but at least I won't have complications. It is better than getting intubated and being in intensive care. What about that text message circulating about the hospitals being full? Nowadays it is so hard to confirm text messages. But these months are seasons for other illnesses and diseases as well, as the weather is also changing. There is a surge in patients, not all of them have COVID, but we must brace ourselves.

The question is do we want to go back to square one? Close your eyes and think about it; deserted streets, no public transport, policemen everywhere. I can just imagine the hassle. The government's funds are already used up and drained, add to that other projects that they need to finish. Responding to this pandemic is long overdue in one's agenda.

Here's the truth: the Delta variant is coming and there’s no stopping it. What we can do is get vaccinated. The registration lines are open for every local government unit. Others are opting to go on-site to walk in and they are being accommodated. It feels like a race now, and nobody cares if they turn into zombies. And if this logic were true, then those who remain humans are set to be eaten by the zombies. So it is better to turn into one. Also, there are shopping benefits for those who got their jabs. Just get vaccinated for everyone's sake and we will be nearing the finish line.
