Glaring errors, obscenities?

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

It is ironic when the agency tasked with the duty and responsibility to provide and ensure quality education for everyone will allow learning modules or textbooks containing glaring errors, obscenities, and even political sleights to slip through its eyes. Obscene words which, according to Antonio Calipjo Go, he has not even encountered in Tiktik. I suppose he reads the stuff. I digress. No need to repeat the offensive word here as I'm sure most have already read the concerned articles. I'm just surprised things like these still slip through the DepEd.

There was a hearing in Congress where DepEd Usec. Diosdado San Antonio mentioned they uncovered one 155 errors from learning modules from October 2020 to June 2021. These learning modules are used in distance learning during a time of a pandemic. They claim they immediately issue an errata for the mistakes to be withdrawn and corrected accordingly. But it may be too late for many students whose highly-absorbent minds quickly take in the erroneous information and start discussing it among themselves.

The DepEd explained the learning modules come from a variety of sources. In other words, they are outsourced. Sounds like hand-washing. In that case, the question is, who are these sources, what are their qualifications such as the educational attainment of those writing the modules? Could it be the students are even smarter than those developing the modules?

This problem is not unique to the DepEd of this administration as mistakes and errors in educational materials have popped up in past administrations. Errors range from poor spelling, poor grammar, poor context, wrong information just to mention a few. There is something wrong with the system. If books or learning modules come from a variety of sources, shouldn't the DepEd have some form of quality control or proofreading to make sure errors don't make their way to the students? The DepEd must also ascertain the educational attainment of the developers of educational materials. At the risk of sounding elitist, it would be preferred if they graduated from known good colleges and universities. No amount of recall or correction can erase obscenities already read by young students. They will ask around, will discuss it among themselves, and search for more information on what the words actually mean. It really is unacceptable how the word in question was even used by the person who wrote the module. It is stupidity at its highest.
