Lessons and hope in pandemic times

READER’S VIEWS - Renester P. Suralta - The Freeman

There is no other time in modern history that people need so much hope. The current pandemic has affected severely so many lives of the rich and the poor. However, such disaster in global proportion has taught us many lessons about life from basic to complex things.

We learn to obey rules and respect authorities than personal interest. We learn to value health to safeguard our own and others. We learn to set aside worldly pleasures over life’s necessities. We learn to sacrifice the economy and social dynamic for life preservation.

We also sacrifice traditional learning to give way to online, modular, and homeschooling. Today basic essential things in life are given top priority over luxury and vanity.

In general, we learn to value health and safety, family solidarity, bitter sacrifices, and strong faith in the worst of times

Lately, the arrival of the vaccines is a light at the end of the tunnel. However, there are those skeptical about it because of its adverse side effects. Nonetheless, we should learn to trust the medical experts instead of our neighbors and to some so-called ‘experts’ who give a dissenting opinion about the issue. The latter are not helping but confusing and sowing seeds of doubts in our minds.

The vaccine along with proper observance of health protocol and standards is our best defense against the evolving virus. We are not certain how long the pandemic will wreak havoc in our county and the world. So let’s be patient and more vigilant more than ever. We should not allow room for complacency and tolerance to prevail after we get inoculated like what happened in India, Indonesia, and Singapore. There is so much at stake if we ignore and violate simple rules for health safety. We should value our life more than our wanton freedom.

Lastly, we should learn to humble ourselves and pray to God the Father Almighty for strength and power to persevere. We are living in the most difficult times in history if not probably the last days as the prophecy foretold. The pandemic can be the tip of the iceberg of what lies ahead. But no matter what, we should never give up hope and faith during pandemic times and beyond.
