Delayed holiday

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Its two days past the EDSA Revolution holiday that we celebrate every 25th of February. I wasn't born yet when it happened but the turn of events are always reminisced in every History class. We discussed it in elementary, high school, and then in college. What happened that day always gave me goosebumps. I realized how the Filipinos could people could stand up to a tyrant who has been stepping on their freedom for many years.

I have always wondered what it would be like to live during that time. It could have been very exciting and scary at the same time. I'm guessing I would be with the people who would march down the street to throw off a dictator, as vocal as I am now too. My heart would be writhing in pain to set my country free, the country that I have learned to love too much, despite its millions of flaws. I wouldn't like to be in jail for what I would be doing but who knows, it could be a story worth telling.

But that holiday isn't remembered at all today like it used to be. Even the administration only rubs its shoulder at the idea of commemorating this historical day, just because of politics. While these events are etched in stone and written in our history books forever, there shouldn't be a hint of disrespect.

Speaking of which, I saw on that holiday the presidential spokesman always cutting of a reporter when the question gets too many or too tense. He blamed the telecommunication companies for that, but funny how the timing is always perfect. See? A small act that could be grounds for interpretation of disrespect.

They say that so you won’t get disrespected you also have to pay respects. Well, I guess psychology doesn't work that way and that our earlier years of good manners and right conduct have always taught us to be respectful, not only to people in authority but to our elders as well. Heck, even to one another as long as none of our rights are violated.

I spent that holiday in a sauna; in a room full of steam to let off. I didn't quite remember that it was a historic day after being so zen and all that, I guess that's how modern-day life treats you. But I wish not to be that apathetic, or else this society will go a downward spiral. Enjoy a holiday, but never forget.

This weekend will be an extension of that holiday and we are free to do what we want to, as long as it’s in compliance with IATF protocols, of course. Imagine if those people hadn’t fight for our freedom, then we would be bound more than we are now. Give that a thought, maybe you might be thinking wrong all along.
