Silence is golden

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez (The Freeman) - January 22, 2021 - 12:00am

New research suggests that talking to someone while infected with COVID-19 could be as risky as coughing near them. Research conducted by professors from the University of Cambridge and published in The Royal Society Journal shows the risks of talking even if standing two meters away from an infected person without a face mask. The person might as well be coughing. What the research also discovered was after an hour an infected person has spoken for 30 seconds, the total aerosol droplets left in the air contain more viral mass than one cough. Gives more meaning to the saying "Silence is golden".

So as much as possible, avoid areas indoors such as buildings, restaurants, malls, and other places that are not well-ventilated. Outdoor areas are still safer. If you have to eat at a restaurant, choose the tables outside instead of the ones inside. Avoid crowded places. If there is a store you want to enter in a mall, wait until there are lesser people inside. Most stores have set limits to the number of persons who can enter.

This is also the reason why cinemas, museums, and other indoor public places have not yet been allowed to open to the public. At present, the number of people who have died from COVID-19 has crossed 10,000. More than half a million have also been positive. Last Wednesday, 1,862 were recorded as positive cases. I cannot stress the importance of wearing a face mask when leaving the house, even if only for a short time.

This is why I don't understand other countries. Cases of COVID-19 are spiking but it seems that they are not obliged to wear a face mask or just refuse to do so. In Europe, the number of cases is becoming a big problem. Some cities have returned to a stricter lockdown and some cities will impose a curfew. America remains the number one country in both the number of cases and deaths. Joe Biden has been sworn in as the next president of the United States. He is tasked to clean up the terrible handling of Donald Trump of the coronavirus crisis. An effective vaccine is still the only solution but delays due to various issues and controversies have plagued its entry. It even started a comedic word war. LGUs have moved to purchase a vaccine of their choice but the national government is not making it easy for them to do so.

I wonder why when the idea is to vaccinate as many individuals to attain herd immunity. Is it because the vaccines the LGUs prefer is not the choice of the Palace?
