Reaction to Perez column

READER'S VIEWS - The Freeman

I am writing in reaction to Annie Fe Perez' opinion piece titled "Never again" published on Tuesday.

I agree that the events of the past should not be forgotten, but instead be our guide in treading the resurgence of dark times today. It is easy to resort to denialism, even revisionism when it comes to explaining to the younger generation what happened during Martial Law, but it is not the right thing to do.

So much of what had transpired during the imposition of 1972's Martial Law mirror what is happening now, especially with the blatant attacks on the freedom of the press. It is truly painful to witness a trusted media institution like ABS-CBN be trampled upon by powerful forces at a time when access to news and information is crucial. But it is even more worrying that it happened because the President himself made a public declaration that he wanted ABS-CBN "out."

I really hope that there are better days ahead for the state of the press in the Philippines, and the Philippines in general. I hope we do not wait for the time when we would be pushed to our knees with a gun to our heads to realize that we live in a democracy, and that lives were sacrificed for us to enjoy the freedom that we currently have. People resisted and fought to give us back our voices, so I hope we remember and #NeverForget that fact whenever any pillar of our democracy is being threatened.
