Millennials are leading Dumanjug's development

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez - The Freeman

Dumanjug Mayor Gungun Gica and Vice Mayor Wado Gica are not only young, dynamic, and very passionate millennials. They are full of progressive ideas to spur the town and leapfrog its development. I have very high hopes and expectations for my father's hometown, precisely because the young are leading Dumanjug.

Perhaps, there is no other local government unit in Cebu today, except Talisay City and Liloan, that is being led by mayors who are less than 40 years old. I have nothing against old politicians. My idol is Congressman Eddiegul, who is in his eighties only in age but is 18 in his dynamism and energy. But the younger ones like Mayor Gungun and Vice Mayor Wado have many distinct and strategic advantages. They are very modern in their perspectives and they can always think outside the box. They are brimming with dynamism and enthusiasms. They are techno savvy and are very well-prepared to network with their counterparts all over the world. They just need an experienced adviser who could whisper to them to push changes with less pain.

The world today is VUCAFIDS, that is volatile, unpredictable, complex, ambiguous, fast, intense, digital, and sneaky. It is the young ones, like the Gica brothers, who have the competitive skills and seemingly inexhaustible passion to navigate along the hazy waters of VUCAFIDS. The times and circumstances are volatile, always changing in velocity that could terrorize the unprepared. There are no more patterns because the changes are unpredictable, calling for constant adaptability and survival skills. Only the young have these qualities. The emerging events are ambiguous, they cannot easily be analyzed, much less understood. Only the young have the stamina to withstand the confusions emerging each day and hour.

The Dumanjug leaders are ahead of their neighbors because they understand and embrace the shocking impact of the power shift of the third and fourth waves of changes, in the global arena as they affect local realities. Mayor Gungun and Vice Mayor Wado are easily surfing and gliding over the waves of changes predicted by Alvin Toffler many decades ago. Unlike older mayors who face new realities still using old approaches, the young executives of Dumanjug are the perfect fit to lead this town to the new world of fast, dizzying pace and velocity of changes in the social, economic, and political variables impinging on local governance.

I am just helping these young cousins of mine to understand more the mysteries of human behavior, how to lead older barangay captains and municipal department heads who are not millennials, so that there would be no class of generational traits. In pushing for changes, harmony should be and can be preserved, while leading Dumanjug to its rightful place in the scheme of local government development in the whole province of Cebu. My mission as a son of a Dumanjug native father, is to contribute my experience in managing human capital so that leaders like Mayor Gungun and Vice Mayor Wado can lead people and manage local governance smoothly, and with less pain.

If Yorme Isko can do it in Manila, and Vico Sotto is making waves in Pasig, then there is no reason why Gungun and Wado cannot make it in Dumanjug. Samsam Gullas is doing well in Talisay and the Frasco couple are leading Liloan with excellence. I expect the Gica brothers to make Dumanjug, the new diamond in the south. Just give them five years, and you will see amazing changes in this southern paradise.
