Huge march for life in the US
SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Valeriano Avila (The Freeman) - January 28, 2020 - 12:00am

Last Saturday Americans held a March for Life Rally in Washington, D.C. and US President Donald Trump became the first ever sitting president to speak in this nation’s largest anti-abortion rally. Honestly, I searched my SkyCable TV news for reports coming from CNN or BBC and they didn’t cover this march, which had nearly 500,000 attendees. Actually, it was the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) that covered it on live TV. Shame on CNN for not carrying this piece of news because they have become too anti-Trump.

In his speech, Trump outlined his administration’s achievements in restricting abortion access, from reinstating and expanding the global gag rule to appointing conservative judges to the nation’s federal courts. As he has many times in the past, he cast Democrats as extremists who want to “allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb right up until delivery.” He also sent a message of solidarity to the activists in attendance, arguing that he’s being attacked by Democrats for his tireless defense of anti-abortion interests. As Trump said, “They are coming after me because I am fighting for you.” In fairness to Pres. Trump he did not even mention his impeachment trial before the Senate.

The March for Life has been held every January since 1974; the year after the Supreme Court established the right to an abortion in Roe vs. Wade. This is when anti-abortion activists gather in Washington, D.C., and around the country to protest the ruling and push for stronger restrictions on the ability to terminate a pregnancy.

Indeed, since Roe vs. Wade, America has witnessed a great decline in its economy and political power. For instance many Americans believe that then President Obama was the worst president they ever elected. Imagine, he had a deal with Iran that would have resulted in Iran becoming a nuclear power. In America today, it is illegal to destroy the eggs of a bald eagle or other US animals, but it is legal to kill an unborn baby. This is what America has become to its citizens.

Of course, with Trump addressing the March for Life, anti-Trump groups are saying that his impeachment would mean his losing the US presidency. On the contrary, Trump’s appearance in the March for Life rally means his re-election is going to happen this year.

Now for some good news, I learned that 6th District Rep. Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano Dizon and 4th District Rep. Janice Salimbangon have entered a memorandum of agreement with the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), through its Chief of Hospital Gerardo Aquino; ECSG, represented by its chief, Phythagoras Zerna; and Department of Health-7 Director Jaime Bernadas, that would help indigent patients. Dizon has allocated P7.5 million for VSMMC and P3.5 million for ECSG while Salimbangon has earmarked P4 million for VSMCC and P1 million for ECSG. Add the presence of the Malasakit Center in VSMMC and this is a boost to patients who cannot afford the cost of maintaining good health.

I don’t know if our current problem of a serious lack of nurses will be helped by the funds allocated by the two Cebu representatives. But like it or not, the problems our hospitals are having today due to lack of nurses have become somewhat of an epidemic of sorts and we can only hope that this problem will be solved very soon.

The coronavirus that began in Wuhan, China, has victimized 17 Chinese citizens, and killed 56. Major countries like the US and Canada have already reported positive cases within their jurisdiction and rumors have spread that this virus came from a Chinese laboratory experimenting on germ warfare.

At this point, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella is considering a ban on Chinese tourists to Cebu. Hmmm…this thought just came just when we celebrated the Chinese New Year 2020, which is the Year of the Rat. People say that this virus came about as the Chinese people of Wuhan would eat their rats as a staple food. Of course, this is the result of so many rumors that China has not told the world how many people have died because of this virus. So if we need to ban Chinese tourists to Cebu then so be it!
