Robredo must learn to move on

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Valeriano Avila - The Freeman

The latest news to come out of the firing of Vice President Leni Robredo from the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD) is that she will not back out from the fight against illegal drugs despite her removal. Robredo said during a speech in her hometown of Naga City, “If they think this would end here, they don’t know me. I’m just starting.”

This gives us an idea of how little she understands things. When you are fired from your post that means it’s over. But Robredo says that she is just starting. C’mon, she’s been the co-chairperson of ICAD and the only thing we saw her do was talk and talk. This gives credence to what many people said that she took out Tokhang from the war against drugs and replace it with talk na lang!

Meanwhile, she continues to spin crazy talk like she was fired was due to Malacañang’s fears she would discover something in the course of waging her version of the drug war. Robredo continues saying, “When I accepted this job, my first question was ‘Are they ready for me?’ now I ask them: what are you afraid of? What are you afraid I might discover? What are you afraid the public might discover?” Actually we were surprised why three weeks have passed and she hasn’t gone into the streets to wage war against the drug lords.

When she was co-chairperson of ICAD, all she did was use her efficient media to bring her to the front pages of our newspapers. That, in my book, isn’t the way to fight the war on drugs. But then how could she fight this war when the first thing she said was that there would be no killing under her control. To me and I’m sure to many policemen, it meant the drug lords were given the upper hand in this war.

Talking about how to fight a war, I recall that the best statement on this came from Gen. George Patton who told his soldiers, “You are not here to die for your country, you are here to make sure that your enemy soldier dies for his!” So she would always maintain her prominence in the news, Robredo said, “In the coming days I will give a report to the people. I will reveal what I discovered and my recommendations.” So now it can be told why Pres. Rodrigo Duterte lost his trust in her. Her statements reveal that she is out to embarrass or expose Duterte even if some of the things she knows could be state secrets.

At this point, I’d say that let’s move on and continue to fight the war against drugs in the way the world is fighting drug lords in South America. I won’t be writing much on Robredo simply because she was happy to see her face in the front pages of our newspapers. Now that she has no important government position, her being in the front page news peddled by her loyal media circles only meant to prepare her for the coming presidential elections three years from now.

This report first came out of social media when Cebu 1st District Representative Eduardo “Eddiegul” Gullas reminded us that "Metro Cebu needed a passenger train system 20 years ago.” He added that Metro Cebu is risking an “economic gridlock” if it fails to establish a commuter train system amid worsening traffic conditions. “That is how far behind we are now.” I fully agree with this statement and I dare say that it’s high time for us to move forward to achieve this goal.

We must accept the reality that was repeated by Gullas who said that trains remain the fastest way to move the greatest number of people in both short and long distances. Then Eddiegul said he supports Udenna Infrastructure Corporation's unsolicited proposal to build, transfer, operate, and maintain a P78.9-billion monorail transit system for Metro Cebu. He added that “If nobody wants to build a Light Rail Transit system for Metro Cebu, as we first proposed way back in 1996, then, by all means, let us have Udenna’s monorail.”

Let me remind our readers that a study made by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in 2018 shows that Metro Cebu is losing at least P1.1 billion in economic opportunities every day because of traffic. So let’s move forwards to make this proposal a reality!
