VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Cebu will once again be in the national limelight as it was chosen as one of the venues for the torch run of the Southeast Asian Games. The last time the SEAgames was held in Cebu, I was just a freshman in high school. We were spared from having classes since Cebu Normal University, which was across Cebu City Sports Center, had so many activities. And also, we were asked to volunteer in the many events that took place.

Is there glory in winning the SEAgames? I'd like to think so. Our very own Mary Joy Tabal was one who won a gold medal then. Moving forward, she is struggling to make it again to the Olympics. Although there are a lot of organizations backing her up, it seems like Cebu in general doesn’t get a feel of the sports atmosphere. We are too busy complaining about too much traffic and how busy our lives are. Look, there is an announcement about a traffic closure but instead of us supporting the event that will take place in Cebu - there are complaints about how to avoid the area where the event will take place. There is no excitement anymore in us that Cebu is now making a limelight entrance. Are we already used to having international events in our place? I hope this isn't the cause of too much apathy.

Apart from sports, we are also instrumental in the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the country. Unless we forget, it was in Cebu where the Spanish explorers first came to baptize those who were residing in the area before their intent to colonize us. Thus, the birth of the many churches in the downtown area. Even if I am not a Catholic, I feel proud that we are taking part in history once again. Who would believe that we would live to see the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines? We are not just any other ordinary province in this country, we were chosen to be special with a different role.

My point is, we should spare the apathy. Yes, it is a hassle for those who want to get their day done, but these events don't happen every day. In fact, they don't even take place in any other country. Instead of raising different issues and complaints, we can all be happy and be proud of the Cebuano blood running through our veins. While the teenagers today are fond of having the fear of missing out, we should also instill in us the fear of feeling nothing for our very own.

Now that these events are already in place and are on the calendar. I hope that we would meet one another in the streets and smile because we are just simply happy with the recognitions Cebu is getting. Our happy faces will tell the world that we are worth visiting and staying in, even for a long time.
