Stay or Migrate

READER'S VIEWS - The Freeman

I’ve been reading some posts in social media about migrating to other countries after learning the new line-up of senators here in the Philippines. Some netizens express their sentiments to our brothers and sisters who may lack critical thought in choosing the right leaders. They believe everybody has a right to vote despite their lack of knowledge. Some also believe that these ignorant voters and those who sell their right to vote for an amount which is good for only a day are held accountable for whatever ugly thing will happen in this nation.

To be honest, this year’s midterm election is my first time to make a serious study on the backgrounds and platforms of the running senatorial candidates. I even made a quick review of history. I know this is not something to be proud of. It’s a little late for me to do this kind of discernment. But I think it’s also good to start this way than never.

Studying the candidates’ plans and connecting them to our nations’ history and the current situation seems a good tool for me to reflect and to grow more as a Filipino. However, another side of my reason which manifests of my being individual, an aspiring artist, wants to ignore politics and mind my own business in appreciating ar; traveling, reading memoir, singing, writing, praising the nature, listening to jazz, etc. I feel the need to be updated in Philippine politics not only during election season, but I’m also tempted to conclude that there is no beauty in politics especially when it talks about money. Thus, I begin to reflect what would also be my plan of action as a Filipino and as an individual. Should I migrate too and chase the artist’s life I’m dreaming of? Should I stay and fight for the beauty of this nation? Or should I be an artist and at the same time a concerned citizen? I don’t know yet. Maybe I’ll come up with another choice some other time.

I could be one of the ignorant voters before, and one of those who learn this year, but in the end, I think our nation’s true life depends not only on us, ordinary citizens but also on the political and church leaders. If I still find no beauty while I’m becoming part of history, maybe I will migrate somewhere else where I can grow more for one more time.
