Finally over

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

The world's most-watched TV series has finally ended. It's time for the cast and crew of “Game of Thrones” to take a bow. That's eight years of my life spent binge watching a well-made series. I was an incoming sophomore in college when it started. Like many others, I was hesitant to watch the show because of the many obscene scenes, only to find out that it explained a lot as the story unfolded.

But the GoT saga isn't just sheer entertainment. It was a fruit of labor from geniuses who thought of the many elements surrounding the show. I'd like to think of it as a reflection of the power hounding the many political arenas today in our society. Like the most coveted iron throne all the powerful nations want to get the most influence over --the world economy. Power breeds greed that sacrifices a lot of people, from constituents to even the most loyal people in one's army. We see it all today, but we are just blinded by reality. It’s so sad we continue to support the greed of those in authority and continue to support them.

King's Landing is the seat of the ruler. Our own local version of it is Malacañang Palace, and like it there are many who want to rule there. Everyone has their own agenda and interests. Others go the extra mile just to be inside; even if it takes breaching protocol and ethics.

Today we are living in the remaining years of this administration. Nothing much has changed, really, except for the incoming senators who favor the administration. They pledged to be independent, but I doubt it.

Daenerys will always be the epitome of a woman in authority. Despite the many backlashes she received and the stabs to her back by those closes to her, she continues to soar as she believes she can. Her will to overthrow those in authority shows what power can do. Her mindset was always to avenge her family that built the Iron Throne and it worked, but I don't know if it is worth it. It can be likened to the political dynasties that have been toppled over time.

So many lessons can be learned from this renowned TV series which I will surely miss. I will not forget the many days I had to fight it out with many friends because we had different opinions and takes on each episode.

There were also times where I had my heart broken as my favorite characters died before my eyes. Thank you, GoT, for the reflections. I hope those who are in power would watch you too, let us just leave the being killed or scorched by the dragon behind.
