When will the voters ever learn?
(The Freeman) - March 26, 2019 - 12:00am

The times they are a-changing. Yet, voters in this country never learn to adapt to change. They still continue to elect public officials based on money and popularity instead of integrity and competence. That’s why traditional politicians take advantage of the voters’ ignorance and gullibility to make money while in office through graft and corruption.

Voters often make a fool of their sacred right of suffrage guaranteed under the Constitution by selling their votes to the highest bidder come election. They are like the mythical Mephistopheles who sold his soul to the devil for a few pesos.

When I saw that lady from Pampanga in Facebook gaily saying with a girlish giggle that she will vote for an actor senatorial candidate because he is good-looking, I almost puked in disgust. Maybe she didn’t know that the candidate has been convicted of plunder and only on legal furlough courtesy of the niceties of the Duterte regime. She epitomizes the ordinary voter in the country who never thinks whom to vote wisely, nor is she aware of the consequence for voting the wrong candidate. The sad truth is that there are millions of her type categorize as MT (masang tanga) in political parlance.

We don’t subscribe to the idea that election is the harbinger of change and reform. We have no illusion that under the present dispensation, there is a fair and square deal between the rich and poor candidates. The only concrete solution to this social imbalance is a drastic and radical change to the oppressive and exploitative system prevailing in the country.
