Celebrating Filipino labor

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

Millions of our people are migrants, both domestic and international. With slim opportunities in this country or in the rural areas to find work and/or reasonable wage that will allow their household to survive, to live sustainably, millions have resorted to living their homes for work elsewhere, within and outside the country.

This country’s labor export policy has also encouraged the global migration of Filipinos. Hailed as modern heroes, their remittances continue to prop up the economy despite and in the midst of the ravages of the abusive and corrupt in this country.

Our migrants continue to be in high demand.

Their hard work and skills have been responsible for the infrastructure of many countries all over the world. Our workers have also been trusted to take care of family members of foreign employers.

The same can be said of many Filipinos doing domestic labor in this country.

Hardworking, responsible, honest, trustworthy, nationalistic and family-centered, we salute all our Filipino migrants and thank them for their sacrifice to keep families and our country afloat.

Our migrants come from the ranks of our domestic workers.

Among the migrants now working elsewhere in the world are those who come from the rural areas- from among our fisherfolks and farmers- our food producers.

Where does our food come from? From the sweat and labor of our food producers. Who are taking care of our natural resources, our seas, our farms, our forests? Our hardworking Filipino workers and producers.

Among our million Filipino migrants are former teachers, former office workers, professionals, doctors, nurses, and more.

Last Sunday’s celebration of the National Migrant Day was a tribute not only for our international migrants but also for our own local workers and laborers. Thank you for your hard work and contribution for our country and the world!

Mabuhay ang Pilipinong manggagawa!

Honesty, integrity, trustworthy, truthful- these are our traits as a people. These are values handed down to us across generations. These are traits that have convinced households and countries globally to open their doors to Filipino labor.

How dare our Filipino workers are called lazy and slow poke by someone rewarded for his patronage!!!

How dare any one insult the Filipinos by saying honesty is not important!

Those who believe that Filipinos are lazy, slowpoke, and not honest are now in privileged positions of wealth and power, due to their kowtowing and defense of those they deem almighty! And although their power and wealth are transient and undeserved, they now have the gall to make their own twisted norms as THE norms for our people!

Conveying their own twisted views and values on all the Filipinos in vulgar and disrespectful manner show how far removed they are from our people. They do not deserve their present positions of power. They do not deserve to be ranked among the honest, hardworking, trustworthy, truthful Filipinos. Down with these abusive, undeserving creatures!

The same protest should be relayed loud and clear to all others in the government who do not have the interests of the majority of the Filipinos in their agenda.

Observe how Congress cannot agree on the budget that should be allotted for the welfare and the service of our people. Observe the allegations of pork barrel insertions and the illegal issues related to the proposed national budget!

How dare these legislator appropriate public funds for themselves, rather than for our nation, for our people! How dare government officials and legislators use public funds as if these were their own personal funds!

No to pork barrel, No to abuse and corruption!
