Kilos

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

If there is one word to describe how the weekend went, I'd choose the word kilos. Why? There were kilos of suspected shabu nabbed by policemen in the region. Based on the latest statistics, it reached more than three kilograms with an estimated value of almost P25 million. Imagine that amount of money and the many things you can buy with it. I don't have even have a million, how much more 25. This money, if it hadn't been nabbed by the authorities, would already be with drug lords and pushers. Only God knows what they would spend it on.

Although it is easy money, it’s still illegal. We all know shabu has a negative effect on the addict and society as well. Aren't you wondering why heinous crimes happen? Drugs prevents a person from thinking twice and stops his conscience from working. The network and the fluidity of this illegal drug trade make it all very interesting.

The Police Regional Office-7 director said kilos of illegal drugs entered Central Visayas through a car transported via a roll on/roll off ship. The car had no driver. When the ship docks, a specific person is tasked to get the key from the side of the car and drive it to its destination. The drugs are hidden inside a compartment, making it impossible for ship crew to notice it.

Is there a lapse? Of course. This could have been prevented if there was tight security in the seaports. As to whose jurisdiction this belongs, I don't want to point fingers. However, if there were enough sniffing dogs in the ports then this would have been intercepted - that if the agencies were also doing their jobs. I'd like to believe there are still those who know about this and receive money in exchange for keeping their mouths shut. This is done just so the drug trade could proliferate.

Who are the victims today? The young adults who are supposed to be enjoying their first years of adulthood, women, and old people who are vulnerable. They have the need for money which is easily found in this horrible business. When they are caught, the bigwigs of this business are nowhere to be found. They are like disposable paper napkins, thrown after they have been used.

We should not allow anybody to have a life like that. Nobody deserves to be treated like trash. Like the right to have a just life, we need to defend each other and help one another that we would not give in to the atrocities of illegal drugs. I commend barangays that have been at the forefront of making programs for the youth. That way they are sidetracked and given more activities to think about. Remember, boredom is the breeding ground of the devil.

I will be out of Cebu for the next weekend but my hopes are up that there will not be any more kilos of suspected shabu nabbed from the streets. I hope it ends there, it should end here.
