Bracing for super typhoons

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

This article was written hours before the forecasted entry of Mangkhut, dubbed as super typhoon, expected to move in the direction of Northern Luzon. Although not as strong as typhoon Yolanda, everyone is still asked to prepare for strong winds, rains, and storm surges.

Do please keep safe, especially all those in Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga. Abra, Ilocos Norte, Batanes, the Babuyan islands and even Metro Manila, which may also experience strong rains.

Gratefully, our disaster management agencies have been on highest alert, monitoring and preparing our people and the necessary relief services and items.

Prayer teams have also been formed and prayers offered for the protection of all in the path of this strong typhoon. Here is one such prayer offered by Sr. Tess Laguna in her FB post which she is requesting all to pray and to share:

“Almighty and Loving Father, Creator of the Universe, we fervently ask for your divine and infinite mercy to take control of the typhoon. We put our trust in your power. We implore you to embrace us and our country. Calm the typhoon as you did with your disciples in the middle of the sea. In Jesus Mighty name, we pray. Amen.”

Aside from Typhoon Mangkhut, will our nation also experience soon a strong political “typhoon” in the form of either martial law to be proclaimed by Du30 or in the form of assassination or sabotage, according to Du30 in his Q and A with his legal counsel, Panelo last Tuesday afternoon?

Had his Tuesday “Address to the Nation” not been cancelled, what would Du30 have told the nation then? Would he have announced martial law for the whole nation? Was his cancellation affected by the earlier news of the Supreme Court’s denial of the TRO request of Trillanes and/or the urgent alert about the approaching super typhoon?

Of interest, while the nation braced for the super typhoon, Du30 chose to have a televised cozy Q & A session dubbed by critics as waste of time and government resources.

Remembered mostly as Du30’s tirade vs Trillanes, one cannot help but observe how Du30 failed to rally our people to be very vigilant about the forecasted super typhoon and how he missed assuring those to be affected that his people are on standby for relief operations and assistance.

While Panelo did not directly ask him about the approaching storm, Du30 said, in response to a question about local palay production, that “bad weather is always a problem faced by Philippine agriculture and he warned of “another one (storm) coming, (that) it will hit you by next day so better prepare to just take a break and lie down.”

Before or beyond super typhoon Mangkhut or Ompong, will our country experience another strong political typhoon from either DU30 or from his critics (the communists, the Magdalo, even the dilawans) whom he has accused of conspiracy?

His words: “They have combined and we have the evidence and we have the conversation provided by a foreign country sympathetic to us … Nahihigop lahat eh. Alam nila ‘yan. It might be a loose conspiracy but they are into it. He said: “the connection will be shown maybe any day now.”

What do you think? Will Du30’s words come true — about the conspiracy, sabotage or assassination plan against him? Or will we, the Filipino people, wake up to see the declaration of nationwide martial law — a clear death sentence to democracy and freedom in our country? During and beyond Mangkhut, let us unite and pray: For our people, our nation, our freedom.
