The Battle of Tres de Abril Series - April 10, 1898 (Easter Sunday) Part 2

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The book “Ang Kagubot sa Sugbo 1898” provides a narrative of what happened on April 3, 1898 (which fell on Palm Sunday) and the following days. It was authored by Manuel Enriquez dela Calzada and contains the articles written by veterans and witnesses of the Cebuano uprising against Spain. The entry on Holy Saturday was written by Don Elpidio Rama and Raimundo Enriquez while the entry on Easter Sunday was written by Elpidio Rama and Isidoro N. Enriquez, this is the adaptation of CEBUpedia of the article written in Cebuano:

The Execution of Candido Padilla

“Solemnly sad, that was the atmosphere on that day. At 8 o’clock in the morning came out from the fort (Fort San Pedro) a file of soldiers led by two drummers and two cornet players. The tune was quiet and mournful that accompanies sad steps. At the middle of the marchers, there were three whose hands were tied, one was wearing black, with ‘chaqueta con chaleco y pichera’ with an ‘Adulfa’ headdress and the other two wearing white ‘camisa de chino’ and slippers. The one in black was Capitan Candido Padilla and the ones in white, were the Regis Brothers. They were accompanied by the three Spanish priests followed by the officials that could have been the one bearing the order of sentence.

(CEBUpedia note: In the book of Michael Cullinane entitled “Arenas of Conspiracy and rebellion in the late nineteenth-century, Philippines” with the subtitle “The case of the April 1898 Uprising in Cebu”. It says that there were three Regis brothers involved in the uprising. One was Eliseo Rebollo Regis, who had properties in Cebu City and Carcar, he was part of the group that captured the three friars in Carcar. He was assassinated together with Leon Kilat in Carcar on April 8, 1898. The other Regis brothers were Emilio and Olimpio, the elder was Emilio who was 38 at the time and Olimpio was 28 at the time, they were members of the mestizo principales of Cebu City.)

When they reached the gate of the Seminario, it coincided with the sound of the bell for the last Mass presided by Father Toribio Padilla, the uncle of the soon-to-be-executed Capitan Candido Padilla, who was the parish priest of the Cathedral and whose liberty was restricted by the guards of the cathedral for being suspected as member of the Katipunan. The acolyte of that Mass was Isidoro Enriquez, the one who narrated the events when he was still alive. (To be continued)
