The Battle of Tres de Abril Series - Good Friday (April 8, 1898)

The book “Ang Kagubot sa Sugbo 1898” provides a narrative of what happened on April 3, 1898 and the following days. The entry on April 8 was written by Don Manuel Roa (who became Governor of Cebu from 1912 to 1922) and Raimundo Enriquez, this is the adaptation of CEBUpedia of the article originally written in Cebuano:

 

“It was ten in the morning of Holy Thursday that the leaders of KKK Cebu left San Nicolas going to the south, and the old city came to silence. The mixed soldiers of the Spanish Government who were scouring the streets could not find any person who could give information.

“The friars who were arrested by the Katipuneros who were held at the house of Cabeza Francisco Llamas came out as they were abandoned by the Katipuneros. Led by Lieutenant Pilisio Sacedon to walk towards the fort and narrated the events of the past days.

 

“Don Pedro Roya, the head of the guards of the Fort (Fort San Pedro), who was part of the first encounter on April 3, on Palm Sunday, who saw Lt. Sacedon sided with the Katipuneros who was ushered to the jail by the guards of the fort. The friars pleaded that Sacedon was with them.

“All the streets were filled by the Spaniards. In the city, arrested was Escribano Antioquia, Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, Don Prudencio Camara, Don Simeon Manalili, Don Julio Llorente, and others arrested in San Nicolas: Don Lusio Herrera, Don Placido Datan, Don Jose Abelgas, Don Raymundo Jurado, Don Agapito Nadela, Don Andres Sibunjanoy Abellana, who were all known people of Cebu. At noon, arrested was Capitan Candido Padilla in Inayawan, Pardo (at that time Inayawan was still a part of El Pardo) at a house by the sea.

“The Fort was full of the arrested Katipuneros, branded as insurgents. However on the part of Lutaw (now Carbon), of the Chinese who were burned. The Chinese were arrested and were ordered to clean the streets, carry the dead and buried them. The wounded were taken care of by the nuns of Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion. Others were brought by Sor Sebastiana Espina ang Sor Feliciana Bracamonte to the hospital in San Jose located along the corner of Serrano street and Urdaneta who were in turned received by Sor Romana Lasala, Sor Hilaria Salinas, Sor Juana Mendez, Sor Damiana Cruz and the rest of the nuns of the Sisters of Charity. The Spanish nuns were said to have not cared.” (To be continued)
